Davie White
Davie White

1967 – 1969
David White was the first of the tracksuit managers. He worked closely with the players on the training field and decided the tactics the team would play in advance of the match. He was the only manager never to win a trophy.

He was born in Glasgow and spent his entire career with Clyde where he graduated from player-coach to manager in 1966. White travelled as an observer with Rangers into Europe and on their return from the final in 1967 he was appointed assistant manager by Scot Symon. Five months later he was manager of Rangers. White was unlucky in that he had to compete against a Celtic team inspired by Jock Stein. He could only win one Glasgow Cup in his 2 years at Ibrox although he did reach the semi-finals of the Inter Cities Fairs Cup where he lost to 2-0 to Newcastle United.

When Rangers lost heavily to Gornik Zabrze in November 1969 in the European Cup Winners' Cup White must have known his time was up. After losing both legs 3-1 he was sacked the day after the match.

White would later prove himself to be a good manager at Dundee where he won the League Cup, defeating Celtic 1-0 in the final in 1974. He would be replaced by a man who was a legend at Ibrox and would enhance his reputation further, Willie Waddell.
